VATA UNMAD WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER: A LITERATURE REVIEW
Dr. Surabhi Arun Yadgire* and Dr. P. K. Dash
. Abstract Unmad is one among the eight diseases described in Nidana sthana of Charaka samhita with complex emotional, behavioral, psychological, and physical symptoms consisting of complaints that are commonly encountered in pediatric clinical practice such as over enthusiasm, excitement, constant and incoherent speech etc. Yet, diagnosis of Unmad is rarely made by clinicians owing to confusions and misconceptions that prevail in the understanding of this disease. A clearer insight into Unmad is essential to utilize the textual descriptions of this obscure disease and its treatment in clinical practice. On the other hand, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the commonest neurobehavioral disorders of childhood, affecting social, learning, and behavioral abilities. Hyperactivity and inattention are the common clinical features of this disease. Both these symptoms are already narrated in ‘Unmada’ mentioned in Ayurveda. Hence, a detailed analysis of the Ayurvedic description of Unmad is made here along with an attempt to identify conditions related to varieties of the disease from modern science. Keywords: Vataj Unmad, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD, Correlation, Review. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
