THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ILLIZAROV TECHNIQUE IN THE TREATMENT OF COMPLEX ORTHOPEDIC CONDITION
Anya Bisht*, Simran Sharma and Rutuja Gargote
. Abstract The Illizarov technique, developed by Gavriil Abramovich Illizarov, offers a minimally invasive approach to bone lengthening and reconstruction for complex orthopedic conditions. The technique involves the application of a series of rings connected to the bone by wires and screws, which are slowly distracted, inducing bone regeneration and formation. This method has the potential to effectively address bone deformities, non- unions, and limb length discrepancies, revolutionizing the field of orthopedics. The Illizarov technique, a breakthrough in orthopedics, presents an innovative method for bone lengthening and reconstruction in complex cases. Named after its inventor, the technique utilizes a specialized apparatus of rings, wires, and screws that gradually pull apart bone segments, promoting new bone growth and ultimately leading to successful correction of deformities, non-unions, and limb length discrepancies. Limb lengthening: The Illizarov technique can be used to lengthen limbs, which can improve the appearance of short stature, address discrepancies in limb length, and enhance overall body proportions. Bone deformity correction: The technique can also be used to correct deformities such as bowed legs, which can greatly improve a person’s appearance and self-confidence. Cosmetic lengthening: The Illizarov technique can be used to lengthen the height of the chin or nose, improving facial balance and harmony. The Illizarov technique has proven to be a highly effective method for bone lengthening, reconstruction, and deformity correction in various orthopedic conditions. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in treating complex limb length discrepancies, non-unions, and bone deformities, with high union and healing rates. Moreover, the technique has been shown to cause less damage to soft tissues and nerves, resulting in better functional and cosmetic outcomes. Keywords: . [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
