Abstract

Background and Objective: Lungs are the most delicate internal organs of the body while asthma is one of the commonest health problems of the respiratory system. Psychological disorders are as usual related to each and every disease. This study will help to find the association of psychological disorders to asthma patients and to know how yoga, pranayama and meditation will improve them. There has been a comparison made between yoga and the billion-dollar global sickness load. Medication is the only option for treating asthma, but it has drawbacks and expenses. To address these concerns, it becomes sense to look into extra therapy. Methods: It was a randomized controlled study carried out from December 2018- November 2021. Asthma patients aged between 18 to 60 years were recruited from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, King George’s Medical University, U.P., Lucknow, India. They were randomly divided into two groups: ‘the case group and ‘the control group’. Their assessment was done at baseline, at 4th month and 8th month. Results: The results of this study suggests that yoga group got significant improvement in 8 month study period as compared to baseline scores, while control group got a little bit change in depression, anxiety and stress level. Conclusion: As compared to "the control group," "the yoga group" showed noticeably greater improvement in psychological measures. Yoga can be used as an adjuvant therapy in addition to regular medical treatment, and it can significantly improve asthma management.
