A DRUG REVIEW ON SIDDHA PHYTOMEDICINE ELATHI MATHIRAI - AN ANTI-DIABETIC DRUG USED IN SIDDHA SYSTEM

Abstract

Siddha system is a traditional system of medicine which is popular in southern parts of India. The Siddha system of medicine's holistic approach emphasizes lifestyle modification, prophylactic interventions, and dietary management to boost the host immunity and treatment with herbal medicines and higher-order medicines as the case may be. ELATHI MATHIRAI is a Siddha polyherbal formulation mentioned for Neerizhivu (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus), in Siddha literature Sarabendira Mega Nivarana bodini. The present study aims at establishing the therapeutic effects of Elathi Mathirai scientifically for the management of Neerizhivu, through a literature review. The review was carried out by collecting the informations from the Siddha literatures and from searching in the publications from electronic databases like Google Scholar, PubMed, NLM, Scopus, Science Direct etc. The review results indicates that most of the drugs in Elathi Mathirai possessed antidiabetic, anti dyslipidemic, antioxidant, immunomodulatory properties based on the data collected in Siddha literature and recent researches. Thus helps in the prevention of risk factors and improves the quality of life of both pre-diabetic and diabetic patients.
