. Abstract Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is the most common of the endocrine disorders. It is a chronic condition, characterized by hyperglycemia and due to impaired insulin secretion with or without insulin resistance. It is an insidious public health problem. It has emerged as a global pandemic of the 21st century. The simplified Indian diabetic risk score was used as an instrument for screening of individuals for diabetes. Objectives: The main objective of our study is to assess the risk of developing diabetes using Indian diabetic risk score in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted among 206 study participants for a period of 6 months. The level of risk for diabetes was assessed by Indian diabetic risk score. IDRS includes 4 parameters consisting of Age, abdominal obesity, physical activity and family history. The results were analyzed by using Microsoft excel sheet. Results: Among 206 patients, the majority of them 121 (59%) were males and 85 (41%) were Females. IDRS categorization revealed that 73 (35.4%) belonged to high risk, 92 (44.7%) belonged to moderate risk, 41(19.9%) belonged to low risk for developing diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: The simple and cost effective IDRS could serve as a screening tool to identify the undiagnosed DM patients and at risk individuals at the earliest, which can help prevent or delay the onset of the disease.
