AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF JANU SANDHIGATA VATA W.S.R. TO KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS: A CASE STUDY

Abstract Janu Sandhigata Vata is a disease that mostly impairs a patient's ability to move around as it commonly affects the large weight bearing joints i.e. knee joint. It is one among Vata Nanatmaja Vyadhi mentioned as Janu Bheda. It has peculiar symptom of swelling like that of bag inflated with air with painful and restricted flexion and extension movement of knee joint. Based on site of manifestation and symptoms it is comparable to knee joint osteoarthritis in contemporary science. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disorder with a strong association with aging and female gender and has 22% to 39% prevalence in India. Case - Present case study deals with a male patient 48 years old suffering from pain with restricted range of motion in bilateral knee joints from 1.5 years. On taking a detailed history and doing proper examinations patient was found to have Ubhaya Janu Sandhigata Vata. Treatment protocol- Patient was given Shaddharan Churna, Lakshadi Guggulu, Gandh Tail Capsule with Anupana of Arjuna Ksheerapa mixed with Praval Pishti along with Janu Pichu and Agnikarma. Results – After treatment, on symptomatic assessment and examinations, pain and stiffness were completely resolved with painless normal ranger of motion. Conclusion- With proper Ama Pachana followed by Vatashamana, Sophahara, Sandhaniya and Asthisaravardhan drug interventions along with therapies of Snehana, Swedana and Agnikarma with proper diet control osteoarthritis can be managed successfully.
