Abstract

Gloriosa superba L. is a perennial climber creeping plant known as flame lily, it belongs to the family Colchicaceae. It is widely used as a medicinal plant they are large numbers of bioactive compounds present in the plant. They are present in two toxic alkaloids namely, colchicines and gloriosine. The whole plant of G. superba keeps several biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anthelmintic properties. The leaves have been present in phytochemical compounds like alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, glycosides, tannins, phenol and aminoacids. This study aims to determine the phytochemical and antibacterial activity of leaves extracts and fractions of growth in six pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcus, E.coli, Bacillus cereus, Coryne bacterium diphtheria, Actinomycetes israelii, and Proteus vulgaris. The leaf powder was macerated using 96% ethanol, chloroform, petroleum ether, and aqueous then fractionated using as solvent. The antibacterial activity test using the agar well diffusion method showed that the extracts of leaves was antibacterial activity against the most active fraction was the ethanol fraction, with a concentration of 50% with an average inhibition zone diameter of 12.2 mm.
