Abstract

EFFICACY OF DHATRI LAUHA IN PANDU ROGA W.S.R. TO IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA

Dr. Malini Muralidharan*

.

Abstract

Anemia, frequently lacking noticeable symptoms, can lead to chronic health issues such as hindered fetal development, delayed cognitive progress, increased vulnerability to infections in young children, adults, and the elderly, as well as reduced physical stamina. The prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia remains significantly high in India, largely due to the economic hardship, lack of education, inadequate healthcare services and low tolerance of oral iron supplements. Hence, greater attention should be given to exploring traditional medicine as a safer and more effective alternative for managing iron deficiency anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is closely resembles with Pandu Roga in Ayurveda. Pandu is a condition characterized by changes in skin complexion. It occurs due to the imbalance of Vata and Kapha, with Pitta being the dominant Dosha, which aggravates within the Dhatus. This aggravation weakens and burdens the Dhatus, leading to the deterioration of Ojas. As a result, the diminished qualities of Ojas manifest in symptoms such as pandu varna (loss of complexion), aruchi (anorexia), bhrama (giddiness), shrama (general weakness), hritspandana (Palpitation) and twak rikshata (dryness of skin) ultimately causing Pandu Roga. Considering its widespread occurrence and the common side effects of allopathic oral iron supplements, the Ayurvedic herbomineral formulation Dhatri Lauha, as described in classical Ayurvedic texts, may serve as an effective treatment for iron deficiency anemia.
