Dr. Shilpa Gajanan Hegde*, Dr. Nagaraj S. and Dr. Arunkumar M.
. Abstract The experts of Ayurveda have explained (Nidana panchaka) five fold method of understanding the disease. Nidana (causative factor) is being given prime importance among them.It is the invariable antecedent of a given phenomena.[1] Nidana is the one which causes dosha abnormality and in turn responsible for manifestation of diseases. Amlapitta is a disease of Annavaha srotas (gastrointestinal tract), more common in present generation due to unhealthy diets and regimens. Only some scattered references are available in Brihatrayees of ayurveda, about Amlapitta. Kashyapa Samhita was the first Samhita which gives detailed explanation about the aetiology, pathogenesis, signs and symptoms and treatment principles of Amlapitta. Shifting of habitat is also advised as one of the treatments, when all other treatment principle fail to manage the condition.[2] So, it is very important to understand and analyse the aetiology for better understanding of etiopathogenesis and for making better treatment plans, as avoiding the cause itself is the prime step of the treatment as per ayurveda.[3] Thus, an attempt is done to analyse the Amlapitta Nidana (causative factors) mentioned by Acharya Kashyapa, which can be helpful in understanding the disease with more clarity and ultimately in its management.
