Abstract

THE INTERPLAY OF AGNI AND MEDA DHATU: AN AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON HEALTH A REVIEW ARTICLE

*Dr. Kumari Deeksha and Prof. Dr. M. B. Gaur

Abstract

Agni is central to digestion, metabolism, and the transformation of nutrients into energy, playing a vital role in the maintenance of health and longevity. According to the functions and site of action, Agni has been divided into 13 types, i.e. one Jatharagni, five Bhutagni and seven Dhatvagni. Jatharagni is the most important one, which digests four types of food and transforms it into Rasa and Mala. Dhatvagni, specific to each of the body's seven tissues, act on the respective Dhatus. Medagni, associated with Meda Dhatu, plays a key role in the formation and maintenance of Meda Dhatu (adipose tissue). The balance of Agni, particularly Jatharagni, directly influences Meda Dhatu. When Agni is balanced (Samagni), Meda Dhatu is properly formed and maintained, ensuring the body has adequate lubrication, energy storage, and protection. However, imbalances in Agni can lead to disorders: Tikshnagni (hyperactive Agni) may result in Meda Kshaya (wasting of fat), leading to symptoms such as joint pain and Emaciation, while Mandagni (hypoactive Agni) can cause Meda Vriddhi (excess fat accumulation), manifesting as obesity and related metabolic issues. The principles of Agni and Meda Dhatu are also reflected in modern concepts of lipid metabolism. Meda Dhatu's function parallels that of adipose tissue in contemporary science, where maintaining balanced metabolism is crucial for preventing conditions like hyperlipidemia and obesity. Understanding and maintaining the balance of Agni is vital for health, highlighting the importance of dietary and lifestyle practices that support efficient digestion and metabolism, ensuring overall well-being and the prevention of metabolic disorders.
