UDARA ROGA: AN AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON PATHOGENESIS, ETIOLOGY, AND MANAGEMENT
*Dr. Gayatri, Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Dr. Garima Prateek Singh
Abstract Udara Roga, a term from Ayurvedic medicine, refers to a spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders primarily associated with abnormal air (Vayu) accumulation within the abdominal cavity. The condition manifests as bloating, distension, and discomfort, and is often linked with imbalances in the doshas, particularly Vata. Pathophysiologically, Udara Roga is thought to result from improper digestion (Agni) and the accumulation of undigested food (Ama), which disrupts the normal function of the digestive system. The disease presents in varying stages, from mild bloating to more severe forms that may involve ascites or generalized abdominal enlargement. Udara roga is mentioned in Ashtamahagada in ayurveda. Ayurvedic texts classify Udara into different types based on the underlying etiological factors and symptomatic expression. This paper aims to explore the pathophysiology, classification, clinical presentation, and Ayurvedic treatment modalities of Udara Roga. Keywords: Udara Roga, Dosha, Astamahagada, Mandagni.
