PHYLLANTHUS NIRURI (STONEBREAKER): A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW OF ITS PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES, TRADITIONAL USES, AND THERAPEUTIC POTENTIAL
*Dr. S. Shyamkiran Singh
Abstract Phyllanthus niruri, commonly known as "Stonebreaker" or "Bhumyamalaki," or “Chakpa heikak” has long been used in traditional medicine for treating kidney stones, urinary disorders, and liver ailments. This research paper explores the pharmacological potential of Phyllanthus niruri, with a focus on its nephroprotective properties, including its ability to dissolve kidney stones, promote diuretic action, reduce inflammation, and prevent stone formation. The study also delves into the plant’s taxonomy, its significance in North-East India, and the traditional methods of application. Various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and lignans contribute to the plant’s medicinal efficacy, as supported by emerging scientific research. Despite its promising therapeutic effects, challenges such as standardization, clinical validation, and sustainable harvesting remain incomplete. Future research should focus on clinical trials, drug formulations, and conservation strategies to integrate Phyllanthus niruri into modern medicine while preserving its ecological balance. With increasing global interest in herbal medicine, this plant has the potential to revolutionize nephrology and beyond. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of its Pharmacological Properties, Traditional Uses, Therapeutic Potential and future prospects, particularly in the context of North-East India. Keywords: Phyllanthus niruri, kidney stone, nephroprotective, bioactive compounds, traditional medicine. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
