Abstract

A wound is any break in theintegrity of the skin or tissues, irrespective of the cause. Wound healing is anatural process and occurs through 5 phases, which are called as stages ofwound healing i.e., the stage of inflammation, the stage of granulation tissueformation, the stage of epithelialization, the stage of scar formation andre-absorption, and the stage of maturation. Medical intervention solely aims toaid the body’s natural processes leading up to the resolution of a wound, toaccelerate the rate of healing, and to prevent or treat any superaddedinfection which may causes delayed wound healing In Ayurveda, a wound isdescribed as Vrana. Acharya Sushruta had delivered a detailed and andelaborated knowledge about this topic. It can be caused by internal (Nija) or external (aagantuj) factors. While external factors are the variousinjuries, accidents, burns, or bites that can result in wound formation, internal or intrinsic factors typically involve the vitiation of the three doshas(vata, pitta & kapha) and further damage at the level of the dhatus, such as mamsa (muscular tissue) or rakta(blood). Also as per ayurvedic concept to manage a vrana, one needs to identify at which stage the wound is. Acharya Sushrutahas described the three stages as Shuddha vrana (tidy wound), ruhyamanavrana (healing wound), and samyaka rudha vrana (completelyhealed wound). All of three types have specific identifying characteristics. Acharya Sushruta has elaborated several techniques in the management of Vrana, including the shashthi upkramas (60 techniques). Along with that Acharyahad mentioned various formulation which could be applied over the vrana which are called as Lepa. These locally applied medicineshelps to prevent the wound fromcontamination thus trigger the healing process. One suchformulation is ghrit kalpna which is described by Acharya as Jatyadi ghrita. Hence a case study is conducted toevaluate the wound healing properties of Jatyadi ghrita. Key Words: Wound, Vrana, shuddha, ruhyamana, & rudha vrana, sukha ropaniya vranas, Krichha sadhya vranas, shashthi upkramas, Jatyadi ghrita.
