EVALUATION OF ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI-ULCER ACTIVITY OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF CITRUS MEDICA PEEL ON EXPERIMENTAL ANIMAL MODELS
Sivaranjani J.*, Rajeshwari M. and Kaviya K.
Abstract The present investigation evaluates the antiulcer and antioxidant activity of ethanolic extract of Citrus medica peel on experimental animal models. The peels were extracted with ethanol and evaluated for its free radical scavenging activity by DPPH method. The ethanolic extract of Citrus medica peel (EECM) further evaluated 200mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight by using aspirin induced model, pylorus ligated ulcer model and cold restrain stress induced models in rats. The study significantly increased SOD catalyse enzyme levels and lipid peroxidation level was significantly decreased, showing antioxidant and restoring to normal. The antiulcer effect of Citrus medica could be due to presence of flavonoids as one of its constituents, as polyphenolic compound is known to exhibit gastro protective effect by virtue of their antioxidant property. The present study concluded that ethanolic extract of citrus medica showed significant antiulcer effect of pyloric ligation, aspirin induced and cold restrain stress induced ulcer models. Keywords: .
