RESTORING THE MOVEMENTS IN PAKSHAGATA THROUGH PANCHAKARMA
Ramya S.*, Anita Choudhary and Shakunttala S.P.
Abstract Pakshaghata is a condition that arises due to an imbalance of Vata Dosha. Acharya Charaka[1] described that aggravated Vata localizes in one half of the body, resulting in Pakshaghata, which leads to the impairment of function on that side, often accompanied by joint stiffness. The treatment approach for Pakshaghata, as described in classical texts, begins with therapies like Snehana, Swedana, and Mridu samshodhanaa.[2] Following this, Basti are administered using Balya and Vatashamaka. The objectives of the study are to evaluate the efficacy of Panchakarma therapies in the management oof Pakshaghata. A 65-year-old male patient visited the Panchakarma Outpatient Department (OPD) at Government Ayurveda Medical College, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, with chief complaints of reduced strength in all four limbs, accompanied by numbness for the past four months. Initially, based on the patient symptoms, treatment aimed at Shoolahara, Sthambhahara, and Avarana removal was planned. Later, as a rejuvenating and detoxification therapy, Dashamoola niruha basti was administered along with the required shamana aushadhis. After the treatment, the patient’s condition improved significantly he was able to walk with support, his speech improved, and his overall quality of life showed considerable enhancement. Pakshaghata often leads to dependency in individuals; therefore, implementing Panchakarma therapies in Ayurveda can help promote self-sufficiency and recovery.
