A REVIEW ON NIGELLA SATIVA SEEDS- A MARVEL HERB

Abstract

Most of the world’s population depends on herbal medicine for to treat many diseases and their health care. Nigella sativa also called as “Kalonji,” is a well-known seed all over the world. Nigella sativa seed has prominent therapeutic effect over many diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cough, inflammation, and headache. Nigella sativa has many extraction methods. Conventional and non-conventional techniques used for extraction of seed. Nigella seed contains volatile oil, Fixed oil, Tannins, Flavonoids, Essential fatty acids, Essential amino acids, Ascorbic acid, Iron and calcium. The main active constituent present in nigella sativa seed is Thymoquinone. Thymoquinone has different beneficial properties like antioxidant, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer. Many diseases has been cure by nigella sativa seed such as skin infections, pain, gastrointestinal diseases, rheumatism, and hypertension. Available marketed formulations are Cream, soap, shampoo, oil. The aim of this article is to provide a detailed survey of the nigella sativa seed.
