PHARMACOGNOSTIC STUDY OF KAMALA BĪJA (NELUMBO NUCIFERA GAERTN.)

. Abstract KAMALA (NELUMBO NUCIFERA GAERT.) is widely described in the Āyurvedic classics. This plant has its own Ethno-medicinal importance since it plays a significant role in the treatment of various diseases. It is having both Curative and Nutritive values. It is used as Single drug and in Compound formulations. In this study, review of various aspects of KAMALA BĪJA was done through Bṛhattrayīs, Saṃhitās and Nighaṇṭūs. The study was carried out on Cough in Department of Dravyaguna, at S.V.Ayurvedic College, Tirupati, which showed Phenomenal results in Cough. The Pharmacognositcal study of kamala bija was carried out at the Siddha Central Research Institute, Chennai. The complete assessment of the Microscopic, Macroscopic evaluation of Kamala Seed and the Powder microscopy showed the presence of oil globules and Phenolic compounds. The Physico-chemical studies carried out were as per API standards. The detailed work is furnished in full paper.
