AMALAKI (PHYLLANTHUS EMBLICA) AS A POTENTIAL ANTIAGEING AGENT: A REVIEW OF ITS PHARMACOLOGICAL AND THERAPEUTIC EFFECTS

. Abstract Ageing is a complex, multidimensional phenomenon which affects all the individuals globally. In Ayurveda, ageing is described into two types i.e. Kalaja Jara (physiological ageing) and Akalaja Jara (premature ageing). The aim of the review is to explore the anti-ageing potential of Amalaki (Phyllanthus emblica), a popular herb from the Ayurveda system of Medicine. The major objective of this review is to investigate the literature available for the phenomenon of ageing as per the Ayurveda scriptures. Along with the description, its underlying causes and symptoms pertaining to akalaja jara, the role of Rasayana therapies in promoting healthy ageing has also been explored. The key concept of this review is to discuss Amalaki's antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and immunomodulatory actions, which are considered to play a significant role in enhancing the phenomenon of healthy ageing. The therapeutic potential of Amalaki, as well as the underlying mechanism of action for its anti-ageing effect, pertaining to its ability to scavenge free radicals, boost antioxidant defences and protect against cellular senescence have been discussed. This review presents a complete summary of Amalaki's potential as an anti-ageing agent, emphasising the need for additional research to fully understand its mechanisms of action.
