Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the utilization of tranquilizers in patients with various diseases and evaluate their use in a tertiary care hospital, specifically KIMS-SUNSHINE. Objectives: This study evaluates tranquilizer use in patients with various diseases, comparing minor and major tranquilizer utilization, analyzing specific tranquilizer usage, and investigating the relationship between tranquilizer use and comorbidities in patients. Method: This study collected 200 cases over 6 months at KIMS-Sunshine Hospital, Begumpet, gathering information from patient case sheets across various departments for a prospective analysis. Results: The study analyzed 200 patients, finding that the 60-69 age group was most prevalent (31.5%) and males outnumbered females (58% vs 42%). Minor tranquilizers were commonly prescribed (86%), with Midazolam, Alprazolam, and Chlordiazepoxide being top choices. Orthopedics led in prescribing tranquilizers (38.5%), especially for Total Knee Replacement patients (26%). Common comorbidities included diabetes, hypertension, and hypothyroidism. These findings reveal complex factors driving tranquilizer use in clinical settings. Conclusion: The study found that minor tranquilizers, especially midazolam, are prescribed more often than major tranquilizers, likely due to anxiety related to hospital admissions. Orthopedics, neurology, and general medicine were the top prescribing departments. Tranquilizers were frequently given to patients undergoing Total Knee Replacement, those with seizure disorders, and those with comorbidities like diabetes and hypertension, with males outnumbering females in the study.
