PREVALENCE AND ANTI-BIOGRAM OF UROPATHOGENS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

Abstract
Urinary tract infection (UTIs) is one of the most common bacterial
infections seen in clinical practice particularly in developing countries.
Despite the advances in the antimicrobial therapy, UTIs remains a
major health hazard. This was a retrospective study conducted in a
tertiary care hospital to know the prevalence and antibiogram of
uropathogens. Out of 952 samples tested, 538 (56.5%) were positive
cases. Gram negative organisms (GNO) accounted for 78.81% of the
total cases, Gram positive organisms (GPO) accounted for 19.7% of
the cases and remaining were candida. Among GNO, E.coli was highly
resistant to Ampicillin (98.8%), Nalidixic acid (98.5%), Cefotaxime
(68.8%) and least resistant to Imipenem (0%) and Nitrofurantoin
(15.7%). Klebsiella spp when compared with E.coli showed less
resistance to Ceftriaxone, Cefotaxime and Norfloxacin, but showed higher resistance than
E.coli to Ampicillin/Sulbactum, Amikacin and Nitrofurantoin. Pseudomonas spp showed
highest resistance to Ampicillin (97.5%) and least to Imipenem (0%). Among GPO, S.aureus
showed high resistance to Ampicillin (86.1%) and least resistance (0%) to Vancomycin,
Teicoplanin and Linezolid. Coagulase negative staphylococci showed high resistance to
Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid (84.6%) and least resistance (0%) to Vancomycin, Teicoplanin
and Linezolid, but Enterococcuss spp showed resistance to Vancomycin (4.5%) and
Teicoplanin (9.09%). Knowledge of uropathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility pattern will help in selecting an appropriate antibiotic for empirical therapy of UTI.
Formulation of hospital infection control committee and strict adherence to the guidelines of
the committee will help in preventing the emergence of drug resistance.
