A STUDY ON PROTON PUMP INHIBITORS IN GENERAL MEDICINE UNIT OF TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: The important factor for a widespread and inadequate use of PPIs seems to be the beginning of these medications during a patient’s hospitalization and its recommendation for continuation in primary care without appropriate reason. Administration of unnecessary medication could cause adverse effects and pharmacological interactions and lead to polypharmacy. Objective: To study the prescribing pattern of proton pump inhibitors. Methodology: A prospective and observational study was conducted in inpatients medicine department at Adichunchanagiri Hospital and Research Center for a period of 9 months. Results: A total of 130 sample population were studied, 63.85% were male and 36.15% were female. The results showed that the age between 60-80 years were more which constituted 43.84%. An appropriate use of PPIs was found to be 76.93% where as its inappropriate use was 23.07%. The PPIs were prescribing in NSAIDS used conditions was found to be (73.85%), followed by others disease conditions (23.07%) followed by GERD (2.31%) and PUD (0.77%). Conclusion: In this present study, the PPI was indicated more in NSAIDS used patients i.e 73.85% and the maximum days for continuation of PPIs therapy was one week which was found to be 73.25% but apparent reason for continuation of PPIs therapy was unclear. In total number of study population inappropriate use of PPIs was 23.07% hence PPI should be used only when there is documented evidence of a GI disorder that cannot be treated with an H2-receptor antagonist and where a PPI use is clinically justified.
