Dr. Ketkee D. Nirmal*, Kalyanee D. Nirmal and Dr. Abhay Vyas
. Abstract Tagara (Valeriana wallichii DC.), a perennial herb native to the Himalayan region, holds a significant place in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani. This review compiles and critically analyzes existing ethnobotanical and pharmacological studies on Tagara, highlighting its therapeutic potential and traditional applications. Ethnobotanical surveys reveal its widespread use by indigenous communities for the treatment of insomnia, anxiety, epilepsy, cardiovascular disorders, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Phytochemical investigations have identified a variety of bioactive compounds including valepotriates, sesquiterpenes, alkaloids, and essential oils, which contribute to its diverse pharmacological properties. Modern pharmacological studies support its anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant, and neuroprotective activities, aligning with its traditional uses. However, variability in chemical composition due to geographical and environmental factors remains a challenge for standardization. This review underscores the importance of Tagara as a multipotent medicinal plant and emphasizes the need for further clinical studies, standardization of extracts, and sustainable harvesting practices to fully realize its therapeutic potential and ensure conservation.
