Abstract

Aim: The thyroid hormone has myriad effects on many organ systems; this makes a patient with thyroid dysfunction more susceptible to perioperative complications. The objective of this study is to evaluate complications associated with thyroid disorders during perioperative care and to assess effect on quality of life in patients with thyroid dysfunction. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted which comprised of 124 study participants having thyroid dysfunction and were assessed for complications, comorbidities and quality of life using case report form and Thypro scale. Results: Association between TSH levels and complications were seen, patients within normal range experienced nil or less severe complications whereas patients with higher levels of TSH experienced severe complications. Complications such as - hypotension, hypertension, gastrointestinal disturbances, fever, arrhythmias, myxedema coma and vasovagal shock were observed. In our study, hypothyroidism emerged as the most frequently observed thyroid disorder. The overall negative influence on effect of quality of life was seen. Conclusion: In our study we found the most common complication was hypotension followed by hypertension as well as we found severe complications like Myxoedema coma and vasovagal shock. It was also observed those patients having normal levels of TSH experienced less severe or nil complaints/ complications than patients with abnormal levels of TSH who experienced complications. Therefore, ensuring a patient is euthyroid is crucial to prevent any perioperative complications.

Keywords: Thyroid dysfunction, perioperative care, complications, comorbidities, qualitty of life.
