AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE - A CASE STUDY
*Vd. Bhagyashri Pralhad Patil, Vd. Sangeeta Sawant and Vd. Sadanand Deshpande
. Abstract Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects both motor and non-motor functions. The primary clinical manifestations arise due to degeneration or dysfunction of neurons located in the basal ganglia—an essential part of the brain involved in motor control. The loss of these dopaminergic neurons leads to a decrease in dopamine levels, a neurotransmitter vital for smooth and coordinated movement. This deficiency results in characteristic symptoms such as tremors, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia (slowness of movement), and postural instability. Non-motor symptoms may include cognitive impairment, mood disorders, and behavioral changes. In Ayurvedic medicine, these clinical features correspond to a condition known as Kampavata. It is classified among the Vata Nanatmaja Vikaras—a group of disorders caused by vitiation of Vata Dosha. Hallmark signs include Sarvanga Kampa (generalized body tremors) and Shiro Kampa (head tremors). The Chala Guna (mobile property) of Vata becomes abnormally intensified, leading to the manifestation of involuntary movements or tremors. Here a case of 65 year old Male presenting with the symptoms of Severe Tremors, Postural instability and difficulty in performing daily activities who was provisionally diagnosed as Kampavata was successfully treated with Sarvang snehan, Swedan, pindswed, Anuvasan Basti and Abhyantar shaman aushadhi’s. Keywords: Kampvata, Parkinsonism, Shodhan, Shaman. [Full Text Article] [Download Certificate] |
