Abstract

SCIENTIFIC EVALUATION OF MAMSA DHATU AND ITS DISEASES: A CONCEPTUAL STUDY

Dr. Narhari Narayan Bunkar, Dr. Niten Barman, Dr Neelakshi DevChoudhury MD (Ay)

Abstract

Ayurveda, the traditional system of Indian medicine, emphasizes the prevention of disease and the holistic treatment of the individual. Its foundational strength lies in core principles such as Panchamahabhuta, Prakriti, Agni, Dosha, Dhatu, Mala, and Srotasa, which continue to hold relevance in the context of evolving healthcare practices. Among these, the concept of DoshaDhatu-Mala forms the autonomous triad that constitutes the structural and functional foundation of the human body. This triad is central to understanding Ayurvedic anatomy, physiology, pathology, and therapeutics. When maintained in a state of equilibrium, these elements ensure health (Sukha), whereas their imbalance leads to disease (Dukha). All eight clinical branches of Ayurveda systematically address these three components, underlining their significance across the spectrum of medical care. Within the Dhatu framework, Mamsa Dhatu—which closely corresponds to muscle tissue in modern biomedical science—plays a critical role in maintaining physical strength, structural integrity, and locomotion. This study specifically focuses on Mamsa Dhatu, exploring its classical Ayurvedic descriptions, physiological roles, and associated disorders (Mamsagata Vikaras), such as Mamsa Kshaya, Mamsa Vriddhi, and Mamsagata Vata. The objective is to correlate these traditional concepts with contemporary understanding of muscle physiology and myopathies. Through an integrative approach, the study aims to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern medical science, offering new perspectives for the holistic management of muscle health and disease.

Keywords: Mamsa Dhatu, Dhatu theory, Muscle tissue, Ayurveda, Myopathies, Raktamamsa, Scientific correlation.
