BRAIN BOOSTER AND ANTI-EPILEPTIC ACTIVITIES OF POLYHERBAL FORMULATION IEC-2024
Deepti Dixit*, Dr. Bhanu P. S. Sagar and Dr. Amrita Singh
Abstract Present work was envisaged to perform research on pharmacological investigations to assess brain booster and anti-epileptic activity of polyherbal formulation IEC-2024 in Wistar Rats. Polyherbal formulation IEC-2024 Syrup contains 144 SPMs from 15 medicinal plants. Acute oral toxicity did not show any toxic or deleterious effects / mortality upto 2000 mg/ kg p.o. dose. The IEC-2024 induced a very wide safety margin so classified as Non-Toxic Constituent. IEC-2024 (500 mg/kg) very significantly shortened the flexion phase of MESinduced seizure and very significantly decreased the duration of convulsion. In neurotransmitters analysis, polyherbal formulation IEC- 2024 significantly increased the brain levels of serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline, attributed to the significant protection offered against MES induced seizures. In conclusion, we have found that administration of IEC-2024 for 15 days increased the seizure threshold in MES induced rats and its possible mechanisms may be due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and monoamine oxidase enzyme. Possible mechanisms involved in the anti-epileptic effect of IEC-2024 include the decreased influx of calcium ions. Polyherbal formulation IEC-2024 has significantly reduced the duration of immobility time in the forced swimming test and showed significant serotonin booster activity.
