STUDY OF TERATOGENIC FACTORS MENTIONED IN AYURVEDA WITH RESPECT TO ANTENATAL CARE

Abstract Introduction- Ayurveda is one of the most ancient Science and is crystal clear in itself. In the present modern era, for maintaining the identity of Ayurveda; it is necessary to prove that the knowledge available in our ancient Samhita is correct with respect to the modern science. Occurrence of human body in proper shape, size and weight is a wonder of nature. There are so many deformities occur at the time of birth or after birth. As Ayurveda scholar there is need of analytical outlook on Garbhaj Vikriti (foetal anomalies) caused by lifestyle of mother and there etiopathogenesis in context of Ayurveda so that it could help in knowledge, prevention and management of various foetal anomalies. Aim-To investigate the association between maternal lifestyle during pregnancy and foetal anomalies. Material & Methodology- Ayurvedic texts, modern literature and journals are referred. Result- According to Acharya Sushruta most of the Garbhaj Vikriti is result of Karma of previous birth (Papkarma), Poorvakarma etc. Some deformities occurs due to Bija Dosha (Sperm and Ovum deformities) means heredity, some deformities due to Matrij Vikrit Aahar Vihar (faulty diet and behaviour) and others due to insult or non-fulfilment of desires of pregnant mother during pregnancy. Vata dosha plays an important role, Sushruta grouped blindness, lame, deafness etc. under congenital abnormalities due to vitiation of Vata disorder and and aggravation of Vayu causes the teratogenic abnormalities. Conclusion-Pre and post conceptual dietary as well as lifestyle regimen told in Ayurveda can minimize the risk of Garbhaj Vikriti. Keywords: Garbhaj Vikriti, Bija Dosha, foetal Anomalies, Teratogens.
