INTEGRATED AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO VATAJA GRAHANI: A CASE SERIES ON THE EFFICACY OF MARICHYADI CHURNA AND BRAHMI CHURNA CONSIDERING THE GUT–MIND AXIS
*Dr. Debashri Chakraborty, Dr. Ranjan Kr. Kalita and Dr. Niten Barman
Abstract Background: Vataja Grahani, a subtype of Grahani Roga described in Ayurveda, closely mirrors the symptomatology of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), with a predominance of Vata Dosha. It is characterized by frequent loose stools, abdominal pain, gurgling sounds and psychological manifestations such as mental fatigue and emotional instability. Despite its prevalence, the condition poses therapeutic challenges due to its chronic and relapsing nature, and the need to address both the Sharirika and Manasika components. Objective: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of Marichyadi Churna and Brahmi Churna in the management of Vataja Grahani, with a specific focus on improving both physical symptoms and associated Manasika Bhavas. Methods: Ten patients aged 20–70 years, presenting with classical symptoms of Vataja Grahani, were selected from the OPD/IPD of the Kayachikitsa Department at the Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Jalukbari, Guwahati-14. A therapeutic protocol incorporating Deepana-Pachana, Sangrahi, Vata balancing and Medhya drug was administered over a 45-day period. Results: Patients showed significant improvement in all the subjective parameters. The combination of Marichyadi Churna and Brahmi Churna appeared effective in managing both somatic and psychological symptoms of Vataja Grahani. No adverse effects were reported, and overall quality of life and bowel regularity improved by the end of the treatment.
