Abstract

AYURVEDIC PATHWAYS TO ECZEMA MANAGEMENT: THE ROLE OF DIET AND DETOXIFICATION

Neha Bishnoi* and Man Mohan Sharma

.

Abstract

In Ayurvedic medicine, Vicharchika, often equated with eczema, is seen as a chronic skin condition caused by imbalances in the Kapha and Pitta doshas, resulting in symptoms like itching, redness, oozing, and scaling of the skin.[1] The Ayurvedic dietary framework, known as Aahar, is crucial for managing this condition, as it focuses on rebalancing these doshas, promoting detoxification, and supporting immune health. The recommended diet emphasizes foods that calm Kapha and Pitta doshas, with a preference for bitter, astringent, and mildly sweet flavors. These include items like barley, mung beans, leafy greens, and medicinal herbs such as neem and turmeric, chosen for their anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and blood-purifying properties. Foods that can increase body heat or cause congestion, like spicy, fried, and dairy-rich items, are advised against. Supporting practices include staying hydrated with warm water, using digestive spices (such as ginger, cumin, and fennel), and keeping a consistent meal schedule to promote digestive balance. Ayurvedic treatments also incorporate Shodhana (purification) methods, such as Virechana (therapeutic purgation) and Raktamokshana (bloodletting), to eliminate deeply rooted toxins. Anti-inflammatory topical applications, like neem oil and sandalwood paste, are suggested to reduce skin inflammation and discomfort. Lifestyle modifications, including stress management, moderate physical activity, and controlled sun exposure, further support dosha balance and immune resilience. This holistic Ayurvedic strategy aims to address the underlying causes of Vicharchika, reduce symptoms, promote healthy skin, and prevent recurrence by combining dietary adjustments, lifestyle changes, and specific therapeutic treatments.

Keywords: Vicharchika, Shodhana, Virechana, Raktamokshan.
