FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF ACYCLOVIR FLOATING MATRIX TABLETS FOR SUSTAINED GASTRO-RETENTION
Kailash Kumar Sirvi*, Dr. Amul Mishra
. Abstract Acyclovir, a widely used antiviral agent, exhibits limited oral bioavailability due to its short gastric residence time. The present study aimed to formulate and evaluate floating matrix tablets of acyclovir using hydrophilic polymers (HPMC K100M and xanthan gum) in combination with sodium bicarbonate as a gas-generating agent to achieve sustained drug release and prolonged gastric retention. Preformulation studies demonstrated that powder blends possessed good flowability and compressibility, as indicated by Hausner’s ratio (1.024–1.306), Carr’s index (9.27–11.84%), and angle of repose (26.24–26.83°). The formulated tablets met pharmacopeial standards for weight uniformity, hardness (4.2–4.7 kg/cm²), friability ( Keywords: Acyclovir, floating matrix tablets, gastro-retentive drug delivery, HPMC K100M, xanthan gum, sustained release.
