Abstract Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is considered as one of the common diseases in the world. Medicinal plants containing active chemical constituents are useful in prevention and treatment of various diseases. Among natural products the alkaloids, biologically active secondary metabolites that can be found in plants, animals or microorganisms stand out. The alkaloids are compounds consisting of a basic nitrogen atom that may or may not be part of a heterocyclic ring. Combination of ayurvedic knowledge with modern medicine can produce better antiulcer drugs of natural origin from medicinal plants with fewer side effects.
