AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME IN CHILDREN: A CASE REPORT
Monica Dhiman, Sheshan Singh, Sunaina
Abstract Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a multifaceted and difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal condition characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel function. As a worldwide health issue, it imposes a substantial burden on healthcare systems and significantly impacts a patient's quality of life, yet no universal cure exists. Within the framework of Ayurveda, this disorder is correlated with Grahani Dosha, a condition affecting the lower GI tract. Its classic presentation includes Muhurbhaddha Muhurdrava Mala Pravritti (the alternating passage of formed and loose stools), Udara Shoola (colicky pain), Adhmana (abdominal distention), and Dourbalya (weakness). This case study details a 12-year-old male patient who presented with a four-year history of frequent, variably consistent loose stools with a foul odour, abdominal distention from gas, nausea, anorexia, generalized weakness, and secondary complaints of poor sleep and occasional headaches. An Ayurvedic diagnosis of Grahani Dosha was made based on the clinical picture. The patient was treated for three months with a combination of Ayurvedic formulations - Hingwastaka Churna, Chitrakadi Vati, Dadimashtaka Churna, Bilwadileha, and Vidangarishta—supplemented with dietary modifications. This therapeutic regimen resulted in a marked improvement of all symptoms, demonstrating the potential efficacy of this Ayurvedic protocol in managing the pathology of IBS.
