CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF VIRUDDHAHARA AND ITS IMPACT ON FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO SANTAN DOSHA
Dr. Rajni Bala* and Dr. Darshana
. Abstract Ayurveda emphasizes that health depends on the equilibrium of Doshas, Dhatus, Malas, and the integrity of Agni (digestive and metabolic fire). When food is consumed in incompatible combinations or under unsuitable conditions, termed Viruddhahara, it disturbs this equilibrium and becomes a potent cause of disease. Among its systemic consequences, Santan Dosha a condition signifying infertility or defective progeny is particularly significant in the context of female reproductive health. This conceptual review is based on classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, along with contemporary research articles from indexed Ayurvedic and biomedical journals. Classical interpretations were correlated with modern findings related to metabolism, oxidative stress, hormonal regulation, and reproductive pathology. Eighteen types of Viruddhahara were identified from Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 26/81–101), encompassing incompatibilities in place, time, processing, potency, and combination. Chronic indulgence in such diet leads to Agni Dushti, Ama formation, Srotorodha, and Dhatu Dushti, culminating in disorders such as Klaibya and Santan Dosha. Modern parallels include metabolic syndrome, oxidative stress-induced oocyte damage, endocrine dysfunction, and gut–reproductive axis disturbance all contributing to infertility. The mechanism of Santan Dosha mirrors these alterations through impaired Artava Dhatu formation and uterine dysfunction. Ayurvedic understanding of Viruddhahara offers a profound insight into diet-induced infertility and reproductive disorders. Maintaining Agni, avoiding incompatible food combinations, and adopting Pathya Ahara remain vital preventive strategies. Integrating classical principles of compatible dietetics with modern reproductive health perspectives provides a comprehensive framework for managing diet-related infertility in women.
