RECENT TRENDS IN PHARMACEUTICAL PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY

Abstract

Pharmaceutical packaging is no longer simply a protective container; it now plays an active role in maintaining product integrity, enabling supply-chain security, enhancing patient engagement, and addressing sustainability and regulatory imperatives. Over the 2020–2025 period, the industry has seen accelerated innovation in smart/intelligent packaging, active material systems, advanced barrier materials, biodegradable and bio-sourced packaging, serialization and traceability systems, and cold-chain monitoring. This review synthesizes these advances, examines the regulatory and standards context, identifies major implementation challenges, and outlines key research and deployment priorities for the next 3–7 years.
