ROLE OF PATHYA-APATHYA IN THE PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF ARSHA (HAEMORRHOIDS): An AYURVEDIC REVIEW

Abstract

A healthy mind in a healthy body is the prime objective of all prevailing systems of medicine. Numerous scholars across centuries have dedicated efforts to achieve longevity and overall well-being. Ayurveda also shares the same fundamental aim. It is a natural healing system that focuses on maintaining the health of a healthy individual and curing diseases of the ailing. In the present era of fast foods, irregular dietary habits, altered lifestyle patterns, sedentary behaviour, and increasing mental stress, the digestive system is frequently disturbed, leading to various diseases. Arsha (Haemorrhoids), commonly known as piles, are one of the most prevalent anorectal conditions in society. They are often observed in individuals who remain seated for prolonged durations, such as drivers, bank employees, tailors, and shopkeepers. In the present era of 21st century Arsha has become most common and distressing disease. Symptomatic haemorrhoids affect at least 50% of the population at some phase during their lives with around 5% of the population suffering at any given time.[1] Pathya and Apathya play an important role in the management of any disease. Bhesaja chikitsa, along with Pathya-Apathya, can cure Arshascompletely.[2]
