SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIBACTERIAL STUDIES OF SILVER NANOPARTICLES USING LACTOBACILLUS PLANTARUM.

Abstract

Lactic acid bacteria are Gram-positive bacteria that play an important role in many food and feed fermentations. Present study is an effort to isolate and characterize Lactic acid bacteria from natural fermented foods and extraction of antimicrobial compound from potential isolates. The bacteriocin produced by Lactobacillus plantarum was partially purified by ammonium sulphate precipitation. The potential principle, if associated with any of the native isolates for antibacterial activity was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy. Results substantiated the bacteriocin produced by L.plantarum to be bactericidal. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized from Lactobacillus plantarum that synthesized potential antibacterial principle. Characterization of silver nanoparticles was done by UV visible absorption spectroscopy which exhibited maximum absorbance at 420nm, Scanning Electron microscope (SEM) showed the formation of spherical nanoparticles. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed the FCC structure of silver nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were assayed for antibacterial activity against bacterial pathogens. The biosynthesized silver nanoparticles showed a very strong inhibitory action against bacterial pathogens.
