CLINICAL STUDY ON PALASH (BUTEA MONOSPERMA LAM. KUNTZE.) WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO ITS ROLE IN DIABETES MELLITUS TYPE 2.

Abstract Man, the superior most of all species has always been remaining in a search of One Prime Goal: “The perfect health”. From Vedic era to space age, all the researches have been directed by the eminent scholars to achieve the same. Diabetes mellitus is a syndrome, characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. It is a group of disorder that shares the phenotype of hyperglycemia. Diabetes is characterized by various degrees of impaired glucose and homeostasis, resulting in long term macro vascular and micro vascular complications. Diabetes is the leading cause of end stage renal disease, a major cause of non traumatic amputations, responsible for 30% of the preventable blindness and a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality. The present work is a substantial step for proving the PALASH (Butea monosperma Lam. Kuntze.) as a mild to moderate antihyperglycemic agent. In Veda, Samhita and Nighantus, PALASH has been prescribed for antihyperglycaemic agent. PALASH has Katu, Tikta, Kasaya rasa, Laghu, Ruksa guna, Usna (Flower-sita) Virya, Katu Vipaka and Dosh Karma is Kapha Vata samaka, therefore the drug seems to be rationale for the treatment of Diabetes.
