REVIEW ON CHRONIC RENAL FAILURE AND ITS TREATMENT: HEMODIALYSIS

Abstract

Chronic renal failure is recognized as a major health problem affecting approximately 13% of the United States population. Majority of the Indian population is suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes or hypertension. Because of negligence, unawareness or poor control of these disease conditions results in renal failure. Reports say that out of one lakh ESRD patients only 20,000 get proper treatment. This is mainly due to the lack of awareness of the disease and treatment options, inadequate access to health centers and, inability to afford the cost. In the last two decades prevalence of ESRD in India has increased. It became a global threat with significant morbidity and mortality rate. So, it decreases overall quality of life of the patients, potentially affecting their physical and mental health, functional status, independence, general well-being, personal relationship and social functioning. It was also proven that the QOL of ESRD patients are very poor and they have to undergo a lifelong treatment for their survival.
