Abstract

MANAGEMENT OF PSORIASIS BY RAKTAMOKSHAN: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

*Dr. Saloni Gulabrao Patil, Dr. Pallavi Nibe, Dr. Shrikant Darokar

Abstract

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory skin disorder characterized by well-defined erythematous plaques covered with silvery-white scales. It affects approximately 2–3% of the global population and has a significant impact on the physical, psychological, and social well-being of affected individuals. The disease is characterized by recurrent exacerbations and remissions, making long-term management challenging. In Ayurveda, psoriasis is commonly correlated with Kitibha Kushtha, a type of Kshudra Kushtha, in which the vitiation of Vata, Kapha, and Rakta plays a predominant role in disease manifestation. Classical Ayurvedic texts advocate both Shamana and Shodhana therapies for the management of Kushtha, among which Raktamokshan (therapeutic bloodletting) occupies a unique position due to its ability to eliminate vitiated blood (Rakta Dushti) and restore physiological balance.

Keywords: Psoriasis, Kitibha Kushtha, Raktamokshan, Ayurveda, Jalaukavacharana, Siravyadha.
