SAMPRAPTI VIGHAṬANA: THE CONCEPTUAL BASIS OF TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO TWAK VIKARA: A CONCEPTUAL REVIEW

Abstract

Background: In Ayurveda, disease is not a static entity but a dynamic process arising from the sequential vitiation of Dosha, Dushya, Agni and Srotas. The framework of Samprapti articulates the entire trajectory from exposure to etiological factors to the full manifestation of disease. Reversing this trajectory termed Samprapti Vighaṭana constitutes the foundational principle of Chikitsa in Ayurvedic therapeutics. Objective: This conceptual review aims to elucidate the construct of Samprapti Vighaṭana, its components, therapeutic mechanisms, and specific application in the management of Twak Vikara. Methods: Classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam were reviewed alongside published peer-reviewed literature indexed in PubMed, DHARA, and Google Scholar. Conclusion: Samprapti Vighaṭana provides a structured, individualized, and disease-stage-specific approach to treatment. Its systematic application in Kushtha and allied Twak Vikara ensures that interventions address root causative factors rather than isolated symptoms, thereby offering sustainable clinical outcomes.
