IMPACT OF REGULAR ABHYANGA (OIL MASSAGE) ON STRESS & QUALITY OF LIFE
Dr. Deepak Kumar*, Dr. Murali K., Dr. Praveen Nandal
Abstract Abhyanga is an ancient Ayurvedic tradition that involves the use of warm, herbal-infused oils applied to the body. It is well-regarded for its positive therapeutic effects on an individual’s physical, mental, and emotional health. This practice has been honed over centuries and aims to balance the doshas, foster relaxation, and improve overall wellness. This review assesses the influence of regular Abhyanga on reducing stress and enhancing quality of life by analyzing scientific literature, Ayurvedic texts, and clinical research. The physiological benefits of Abhyanga include activating the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol levels, promoting better circulation, and modulating neurotransmitters, all of which play a role in reducing stress. Furthermore, Abhyanga has been shown to enhance sleep quality, support emotional stability, and bolster immune function. Several studies have also emphasized its effectiveness in managing mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. While Abhyanga enjoys a long history of traditional use, its scientific endorsement remains in development, with few standardized practices in modern healthcare frameworks. This review seeks to connect the rich knowledge of Ayurveda with current scientific findings, offering evidence-based perspectives on Abhyanga as a tool for managing stress. The results indicate that integrating Abhyanga into daily life can yield substantial holistic health advantages, making it a significant complementary approach for tackling contemporary stress-related issues. Additional research and clinical studies are crucial to further clarify its role within integrative medicine and to establish standardized therapeutic guidelines.
