ECHINOPS ECHINATUS ROXB. (USTRAKANTAKA): BRIDGING TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND MODERN THERAPEUTICS—A INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Abstract Echinops echinatus, that has been extensively utilized in traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda and various folk practices. E. echinatus is a xerophytic herbaceous plant that is commonly known as “Utakatira.” Its root, leaves, fruit, seeds and bark are the most commonly used parts have been employed for the management of a wide range of ailments, particularly sexual debility, urinary disorders, hepatic diseases, and gynecological conditions. Bioactive phytoconstituents, including flavonoids such as apigenin and apigenin-7-O-glucoside, the phenolic compound echinacin, and the alkaloid echinopsine. By integrating classical knowledge with contemporary scientific findings, this review aims to provide a consolidated resource that highlights the therapeutic relevance of Ustrakantaka and identifies its potential for future pharmacological research and clinical applications.
