Abstract

DIABETES MELLITUS: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW THROUGH THE PERSPECTIVES OF MODERN MEDICINE AND AYURVEDA

Dr. Abhijit Hanmant Mane*, Dr. Jyoti Chopade, Dr. Sandesh Chokhar

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent metabolic disorders of the modern era, characterized by persistent hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. The increasing prevalence of diabetes worldwide has become a major public health concern due to its association with chronic complications affecting the cardiovascular, renal, nervous, and visual systems. Despite significant advances in pharmacological management, long-term glycaemic control remains challenging because of lifestyle-related risk factors, treatment adherence issues, and disease progression. Ayurveda describes a comparable clinical entity under the broad concept of Prameha, particularly Madhumeha, which is considered a disorder involving derangement of Kapha dosha, impaired metabolism (Agni dushti), and depletion of body tissues (Dhatu kshaya) in advanced stages. Classical Ayurvedic texts provide detailed descriptions of etiological factors, pathogenesis, prognosis, dietary practices, lifestyle modifications, and therapeutic approaches for managing Prameha. These principles emphasize correction of metabolic imbalance through Ahara (diet), Vihara (lifestyle), Shodhana (purification therapies), and Shamana (pacifying therapies).

Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, Madhumeha, Prameha, Ayurveda, insulin resistance, metabolic disorder, lifestyle modification, integrative medicine.
