PSYCHOSOMATIC MEDICINE AND THE GUT – BRAIN AXIS: A HOMOEOPATHIC PERSPECTIVE

Abstract Psychosomatic medicine recognizes the intricate relationship between psychological processes and physical health. In recent years, the concept of the gut–brain axis (GBA) has emerged as a significant scientific paradigm, highlighting the bidirectional communication between the central nervous system, enteric nervous system, neuroendocrine pathways, immune mechanisms, and gut microbiota. Growing evidence suggests that psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression play a crucial role in the development and progression of various gastrointestinal disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Homoeopathy, with its holistic and individualized approach, has traditionally emphasized the unity of mind and body and the importance of mental and emotional factors in disease causation and management. This review aims to explore the contemporary understanding of psychosomatic medicine and the gut–brain axis from a homoeopathic perspective. The article discusses the historical evolution of psychosomatic concepts, components and mechanisms of the gut–brain axis, psychosomatic gastrointestinal disorders, and the relevance of homoeopathic principles in understanding mind–body interactions. Furthermore, the role of homoeopathic therapeutics in managing gut–brain axis disorders and the available scientific evidence supporting homoeopathic interventions are reviewed. The integration of modern gut–brain axis research with homoeopathic philosophy offers a promising framework for understanding complex psychosomatic disorders. Further interdisciplinary research is warranted to substantiate the potential role of homoeopathy in the comprehensive management of gut–brain axis-related disorders. Keywords: .
