Abstract

BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLERS BENEFITS, EFFICACY, LONGTERM OUTCOMES AND SIDE EFFECTS

Ms. Mansi M. Mankar*, Dr. Prajakta N. Kelgaonkar

Abstract

Botulinum toxin (Botox) and dermal fillers are among the most commonly used minimally invasive aesthetic procedures for facial rejuvenation and correction of age-related changes. This review evaluates the benefits, efficacy, duration of effects, long-term outcomes, safety, and adverse effects associated with botulinum toxin and dermal fillers, particularly hyaluronic acidbased fillers. The selected literature includes systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical studies, and reviews addressing aesthetic outcomes and complications. Botulinum toxin produces temporary reduction of dynamic facial wrinkles by inhibiting acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction and has demonstrated good efficacy in areas such as the glabellar, forehead, and lateral canthal lines. Dermal fillers, particularly hyaluronic acid fillers, restore lost facial volume and improve wrinkles, folds, facial contours, and tissue symmetry. Both treatments generally demonstrate favourable short-term safety profiles and high patient satisfaction. However, their effects are temporary and repeated treatments may be required to maintain aesthetic outcomes. Common adverse effects include pain, swelling, erythema, bruising, tenderness, headache, ptosis, nodules, and contour irregularities. Rare but potentially serious complications of dermal fillers include vascular occlusion, tissue necrosis, infection, delayed inflammatory reactions, and vision-threatening complications. Long-term evidence indicates generally acceptable safety when these procedures are appropriately performed, although data regarding repeated treatments and permanent or delayed complications remain limited. Therefore, appropriate patient selection, knowledge of facial anatomy, selection of suitable products, proper injection techniques, and effective management of complications are essential for achieving favorable outcomes. Further long-term, high-quality clinical studies are needed to establish the sustained efficacy and safety of repeated Botox and dermal filler treatments.
