Abstract

Amavata is a disorder caused by the accumulation of Ama due to impaired Agni and the aggravation of Vata Dosha. In Madhava Nidana (25/6–10), the characteristic symptoms of Amavata include Angamarda (body ache), Aruchi (loss of appetite), Trishna (excessive thirst), Alasya (lassitude), Gaurava (heaviness), Jwara (fever), Apaka (indigestion), and Shunata Anganam (swelling of body parts). The disease predominantly affects joints such as the hands, feet, ankles, knees, hips, and shoulders, producing severe pain, swelling, stiffness, and restricted movement. Associated features include excessive salivation, anorexia, fatigue, burning sensation, polyuria, abdominal distension, constipation, sleep disturbances, nausea, giddiness, and generalized weakness. Clinically, Amavata closely resembles Rheumatoid Arthritis, a chronic systemic autoimmune disease characterized by symmetrical polyarthritis, synovial inflammation, and progressive joint destruction. Ayurvedic treatment aims to perform Deepana, Pachana, Ama Shoshana, and Vata-Kapha Shamana. Bhallatakadi Churna possesses Katu-Tikta Rasa, Ushna Virya, and Katu Vipaka, which help digest Ama, stimulate Agni, reduce inflammation, and alleviate pain and stiffness. Modern studies have demonstrated that Semecarpus anacardium exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, supporting its utility in inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. This review article aims to critically evaluate classical references, pharmacodynamic properties, and available scientific evidence regarding Bhallatakadi Churna in the management of Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis). Based on Ayurvedic principles and contemporary pharmacological data, Bhallatakadi Churna appears to be a promising and rational therapeutic option for reducing disease activity and improving quality of life in patients with Amavata.

Keywords: Bhallatakadi Churna (Bhallataka, Harad, Tila), Amavata, Rheumatoid Arthritis.
