RASA SHASTRA AND MERCURY THERAPY: THE MARVELS OF ANCIENT INDIAN ALCHEMY AND CHEMISTRY

Abstract Rasa Shastra, an integral specialized branch of Ayurveda emerging predominantly between the 8th and 16th centuries CE, represents one of the world's most sophisticated early traditions of proto-chemistry, metallurgy, and iatrochemistry. Centered on Parada (elemental mercury, Hg), Rasa Shastra transformed toxic metallic and mineral substances into stable, biocompatible therapeutic formulations known as Bhasmas (calcined micro/nano-materials) and Kupi Pakwa Rasayanas (sublimated mercurial compounds). 1. Classical metallurgical operations (Samskaras, Shodhana, Maran). 2. Solid-state chemical transformations converting toxic zerovalent elemental mercury into stable red mercuric sulfide, and. 3. Modern toxicological, physicochemical, and pharmacokinetic evaluations of these preparations. Physicochemical data (XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, FTIR) reveal that classical processing systematically alters crystal lattices, diminishes particle dimensions into the nanoscale range (15–60 nm), and yields organo-metallic complexes with significantly lowered systemic bioavailability compared to raw, free elemental or organic mercury forms. Modern pre-clinical toxicological studies indicate that when processed in strict compliance with classical codices, compounds such as Kajjali and Makaradhwaja exhibit distinct pharmacokinetic behaviors from methylmercury or inorganic mercuric chloride.
