THE ROLE OF PRANAYAMA AND ACHARA RASAYANA (ETHICAL CONDUCT) IN MANAGING OCCUPATIONAL STRESS AND HYPERTENSION
Dr. Nitai Senapati*
Abstract Occupational stress has emerged as a major global health hazard in the modern corporate framework, serving as a primary driver for the onset and exacerbation of essential hypertension. Chronic workplace stress triggers sustained activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)axis, resulting in endothelial dysfunction, arterial stiffness, and elevated systemic vascular resistance. Traditional pharmacological approaches often manage symptoms without addressing the underlying psychosocial and lifestyle roots. This comprehensive paper explores the synergistic efficacy of two ancient Vedic disciplines: Pranayama (yogic breath control) and Achara Rasayana (the Ayurvedic code of socio-behavioral and ethical conduct). Pranayama acts through physiological pathways, up regulating parasympathetic activity via vagal nerve stimulation, decreasing baroreflex sensitivity degradation, and restoring autonomic equilibrium. Simultaneously, Achara Rasayana operates as a psychological stabilizer, mitigating cognitive stress appraising mechanisms through emotional regulation, altruism, and ethic alalignment. Together, they offer a holistic, non-pharmacological paradigm to prevent, mitigate, and manage stress-induced cardiovascular pathology.
