Abstract

DRUG UTILIZATION EVALUATION OF PARENTERAL PANTOPRAZOLE IN SOUTH INDIAN TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

Abstract

Background: Drug utilization evaluation (DUE) is an improvement process designed to review drug use and/or prescribing patterns. DUE results may be compared to a specific standard and its implements various strategies to ensure that drugs are used appropriately, safely and effectively. Parenteral pantoprazole due to their efficacy, safety and easy availability they are widely used without indication, which in turn increases the cost of the therapy to the patients. Methods: A retrospective treatment chart review of the patients admitted to the medicine, surgery and gastroenterology were done over a period of nine months. About one hundred in-patients treatment chart were evaluated for prescribing pattern of parenteral pantoprazole. All in-patients who were treated with parenteral pantoprazole were included in the study. Patients treated with parenteral pantoprazole in other specialties like, paediatrics, gynaecology, and orthopaedics wards were excluded. The usages of parenteral pantoprazole were compared with the developed guidelines by formal consensus method to assess the appropriateness of use in medicine, surgery and gastroenterology wards. Results: The study assessed appropriateness of use of parenteral pantoprazole in terms of indication for use, dose, frequency of administration and duration of therapy. The appropriateness of use of parenteral pantoprazole with indication for the use was found to be only 13%, dose 100%, frequency 100%, and duration of therapy was 79% in accordance with the developed standard therapeutic guidelines. Conclusion: Wide uses of parenteral pantoprazole for many inappropriate indications were observed when compared with respect to the developed standard therapeutic guidelines.
