POST-ABORTAL CERVICITIS AND GARBHASRAVA–GARBHAPATA PARICHARYA: A CRITICAL AYURVEDA–MODERN MEDICINE REVIEW
Dr. Smita Atul Deshmukh*
Abstract Cervicitis is inflammation of the cervix. When it is found after an abortion or miscarriage, the first task is to determine whether it is limited to the cervix or is part of an infection involving the uterus and other pelvic organs. This distinction matters because delayed treatment of a serious infection can cause lasting harm. Ayurveda describes Garbhasrava and Garbhapata and gives advice on care after pregnancy loss. This critical narrative review compares that advice with modern guidance on diagnosis, infection prevention, treatment and recovery. Classical passages were read in an English translation of the Sushruta Samhita. Clinical recommendations were drawn from international abortion care and sexually transmitted infection guidance. The classical material describes diet, care adapted to strength and digestion, and attention to symptoms after pregnancy loss. These ideas may inform supportive care, but they do not establish a treatment for a confirmed cervical infection. Current clinical guidance supports appropriate testing, antibiotics when indicated, partner care for sexually transmitted infections, and urgent referral for suspected uterine infection or sepsis. A safe combined approach would retain these measures and study clearly defined, low-risk supportive care separately. Direct clinical evidence for Garbhasrava–Garbhapata Paricharya in confirmed post-abortal cervicitis remains unestablished in the sources reviewed. Future studies should measure recovery and safety without delaying proven treatment. Keywords: Post-abortal cervicitis; Garbhasrava; Garbhapata; Paricharya; post-abortion care; Ayurveda.
